The boaters initially observed the rarely seen predators zig-zagging "in about 150 feet of water," as described by Monterey Bay Whale Watch in a Facebook post dated December 13. The orcas, in pursuit of a sea lion, began leaping from the water, showcasing multiple breaches and tail slaps during the hunt.

"Then all of a sudden, multiple whales started porpoising out of the water, hunting a sea lion! There were multiple breaches and tail slaps happening," detailed the tour agency in its post. "They did successfully predate on a sea lion and fed on that one for several minutes."

An hour later, the orcas resumed their hunting activities, this time targeting a "very large male sea lion." The agency's post mentioned, "Once again, they started tail throwing, porpoising, and breaching during the hunt. They did successfully predate on the male sea lion and prey shared among each other."

Drone footage captured the orcas' attacks, while photos showcased their breaches and swimming in the bay. Despite the potential sadness in witnessing such events, the agency emphasized the importance of nature and ecosystem dynamics, especially for researchers studying these animals.

After the second attack, the whales swiftly traveled northwest, concluding an absolutely amazing day, as stated by experts with the agency.
